EARL is an educational slowdown light. It shows red when there are no vehicles. When a driver is detected and is traveling at the correct speed, EARL turns green. In case of speeding, it stays red.
Earl records speed and vehicle count data. It is therefore possible to measure its effectiveness easily through a smartphone application. Municipalities will be
able to measure its impact on the drivers’ behavior through statistics such as : Average speed ahead of traffic light (Before), Average speed in front of traffic light (After), Number of vehicles, Light health status, Advanced statistics (green/red, red/green tipping rates, etc.).
The speed of the vehicles is detected by a Doppler antenna generally integrated on the light. This antenna emits waves that are reflected on the moving vehicle. The return frequency of the wave then determines its speed with a very high precision.
For maximum efficiency, position EARL™ according to the following criterias:
• on a two-lane road, in urban areas where the speed limit is 50 km/h (30 mph) or less
• on a stretch of road i.e. at least 30 m (100 ft) from a pedestrian crossing or an intersection.
It is a proven concept with over 1,000 units deployed in France and throughout Europe. It has demonstrated a strong compliance rate in not only reducing average speeds, but eliminating speeding problems in school zones or any other high-risk areas.
